( Details ) Starring: Tom Cruise , Colin Farrell , Samantha Morton Director: Steven Spielberg Video Release: December 2002 | Theatrical Release: 2002 Rating: PG-13 (MPAA) Released by Dreamworks | UPC: 678149019124 chapters.indigo Review Far more resonant -- and creepy -- than a sci-fi story set in a far-distant time, Steven Spielberg's Minority Report bumps our imaginations a mere half-century or so forward to 2054. In Washington D.C., troubled cop John Anderton (Tom Cruise) immerses himself in his work in the innovative and astonishingly effective Precrime unit, which uses "precogs" -- a trio of pale savants brain-damaged by drug-addicted mothers -- who can see murders before they happen. This is a system Anderton could have used several years before when his young son was snatched from a public pool, a tragedy that destroyed his marriage and drove him to seek solace in neuroin, the near-future's drug of choice. Anderton's fierce loyalty to the Precrime program takes on a sordid twist when he himself is tagged as a future murderer, his name etched into a wooden ball by a pleasingly Rube Goldbergish device amid the high-tech world of mid-21-century policing, with its jet-packs, "sick sticks" and menacing "halos" -- a chilling sort of handcuffs for the mind. Indeed, it is in the high-tech details and "incidental" special effects that the film really makes an impact: a cereal box that plays its jingle when it is picked up; interactive, real-time newspapers with headlines that show breaking news; highways that do the driving, both in the horizontal and vertical planes; and omnipresent billboards that scan people's retinas so as to address them by name with their pitches -- the Gap has never been quite that creepy. Solid performances by Cruise, Colin Farrell (in a greasy haircut and bad moustache as the ambitious Fed after Anderton's job) and Samantha Morton (as the waifish precog Agatha) would have pleased Philip K. Dick, whose eponymous short story inspired this top-grade sci-fi thriller.
