( Details ) Starring: Tobey Maguire , Kirsten Dunst , Willem Dafoe Video Release: November 2002 | Theatrical Release: 2002 Runtime: 121 Rating: PG-13 (MPAA) Released by Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment | UPC: 043396096615 chapters.indigo Review Marvel's wall-crawling superhero hit the big-screen with just the right mix of flash and heart: the CGI scenes scratched the action-movie itch, but the performances from a remarkably well-chosen cast were equally satisfying. Tobey Maguire played orphaned teen Peter Parker perfectly, as an earnest, intelligent and likeable guy with nerdish leanings that don't exactly get him the girl of his dreams, Mary Jane Watson (a gorgeous Kirsten Dunst). On a field trip, Peter is bitten by a genetically modified spider (not radioactive, as in the comic book series) and wakes up the next morning to find that he doesn't need his geeky glasses and that he has suddenly developed a cool, buff bod, to boot. Peter is a bit bewildered by his new abilities, which he gradually discovers in a kind of puberty-redux and learns to control with a mix of abandon and maturity -- that first swing off a tall building is as exhilerating for viewers as for Peter. After the tragic loss of his kindly uncle/adopted father, Peter soothes his guilt and grief by using his powers in pursuit of justice. He moves into a ridiculously cool apartment in New York with his wealthy friend, Harry Osborn (James Franco) and achieves a nice work-life balance: moonlighting as superhero and chronicling his own exploits for his day-job as photographer for the Daily Bugle. (Perhaps the movie's most amusing surprise is flat-topped cigar-chomping editor J. Jonah Jameson, played with spot-on vitriol by J. K. Simmons.) Enter Harry's ambitious father, Norman (the perfect villain, Willem Dafoe), who, desperate to build a super-soldier for the Army, conducts an experiment upon himself and creates a maniacal alter-ego, The Green Goblin. Spidey has his arch-nemesis. Check. Now we need the girl: Mary Jane has also moved to the Big Apple, which is good. But she's dating Harry, which is bad. The film culminates in some thrilling crash-and-bash action, some terrific scenes between the love interests and the perfect set-up for the sequel. Not to reference Dunst or anything, but: bring it on.
