Rowling chapters.indigo Review This book has everything: conflict, revenge, laughs, suspense and, yes, dog poo. Large, soft, smelly and exactly the shape of a shoe, so it's especially difficult to spot until it's too late. Unwitting biscuit taster and father of three Mister Mack spends almost the entire book with his foot inches away from a mound of poo, ironically produced by his very own dog. Mister Mack is not merely unlucky -- he is being punished for sending his sons to their room the night before. You see, the rights and dignity of children everywhere are protected by the Gigglers, a band of small elf-like creatures who keep their furry ears to the ground for adults farting and blaming it on their kids or other such injustices. Such odious adults receive the poo-on-the-shoe punishment known as The Giggler Treatment. In an uproariously roundabout way, Doyle moves the story back and forth in time and silliness with dizzying speed and wit, going several times back to the great, great, great (keep saying great for 28 minutes) grandsires of the characters in the book and naming chapters after his refrigerator. There is a fish-hating seagull and a sandwich-snatching vulture and a very clever baby named Kayla who is able to communicate the most complex thoughts by simply saying: "A-bah." Perhaps the most hilarious character of all is the proud poo-producer himself, Rover, a stunningly clever dog who has built an empire on his own poo -- he is the Gigglers' top supplier, and they always pay well for their poo. Doyle is at the top of his form in his first book for children: the dialogue is snappy and crackling with wit and is best appreciated by reading it aloud. His choppy chapter breaks and rib-tickling digressions bring the suspense to a surprising pitch as Mister Mack's family begins the wonderfully overblown race to save Daddy from his squishy fate. This is more than a gross-out book -- it tweaks the noses of adults and yet rises above the staid "kids good, adults bad" theme that runs through so many children's books. But just the same, never underestimate the comic value of the phrase "doing rudies." (Look it up in the Glossary of Irish terms in the back of the book.) Giggles abound in this brilliant kid-lit debut. Ages 7 and up.
